Practicing Cross-Cultural Care Based in Wutai

Nursing students are guided into the Wutai community in Pingtung to listen to older residents through field interviews and companionship, gaining a deeper understanding of local needs and ways of life. By integrating nursing expertise with Indigenous culture, the program puts cross-cultural health care into practice and aims to cultivate future nurses with strong humanistic compassion.

2.	Chen YC, Chen CC, Strollo PJ Jr, Li CY, Ko WC, Lin CY*, Ko NY* (2021, Nov). Differences in sleep disorders between HIV-infected persons and matched controls with sleep problems: A matched-cohort study based on laboratory and survey data. Journal of Clinical Medicine. 10(21): 5206.

(SCI, IF=3.0, MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL = 58/325)

Poor sleep quality is common among older adults and may reduce quality of life while adversely affecting cognitive function and physical health. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the effectiveness of music listening in improving sleep quality among older adults.

5.	Chen YC *, Lu TH (co-first author), Ku EN, Chen CT, Fang CJ, Lai PC, Liu CH (2023, Jan). Efficacy of brief behavioural therapy for insomnia in older adults with chronic insomnia: a systematic review and meta-analysis from randomised trials. Age and Ageing. 52(1): afac333.
https://doi.org/10.1093/ageing/afac333.
(SCI, IF=6.0, GERIATRICS & GERONTOLOGY =7/74)

Chronic insomnia is a highly prevalent and persistent health problem among older adults and has significant adverse effects on cognitive function and physical health. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term (4-week) brief behavioral therapy for insomnia (BBTi) in alleviating insomnia among older adults with chronic insomnia.

Oral Health Care for Older Adults

2.	Chen YC, Ku EN, Tsai PF, Ng CM, Wang JL, Lin CW, Ko NY*, Chang YJ* (2022, Dec). Effect of 0.12% chlorhexidine oral rinse on preventing hospital-acquired pneumonia in nonventilator inpatients. Journal of Nursing Research. 30(6): e248. https://doi.org/10.1097/jnr.0000000000000527
(SSCI/SCI, IF=2.4, NURSING= 35/191)

Non-ventilator hospital-associated pneumonia (NV-HAP) is a multifactorial healthcare-associated infection that is particularly common among patients with poor oral health. This study investigated the effects of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash on oral health in hospitalized patients and its effectiveness in reducing the incidence of NV-HAP.

3.	Liu T, Chen YC (co-first author), Jeng SL, Chang JJ, Wang JY, Lin CH, Tsai PF, Ko NY, Ko WC and Wang JL* (2023, Feb) Short-term effects of Chlorhexidine mouthwash and Listerine on oral microbiome in hospitalized patients. Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology. 13:1056534.
https://doi.org/10.3389/fcimb.2023.1056534
(SCI, IF=4.6, MICROBIOLOGY = 37/161)

This study compared the effects of chlorhexidine (CHX), an essential-oil-containing mouthwash such as Listerine®, and normal saline on oral bacteria in three groups of hospitalized patients, using 16S rDNA analysis to evaluate changes in the microbial community.
